Was the Stone Age Actually the Wood Age?
  + stars: | 2024-05-04 | by ( Franz Lidz | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The basic chronology — Stone Age to Bronze Age to Iron Age — now underpins the archaeology of most of the Old World (and cartoons like “The Flintstones” and “The Croods”). Thomsen could well have substituted Wood Age for Stone Age, according to Thomas Terberger, an archaeologist and head of research at the Department of Cultural Heritage of Lower Saxony, in Germany. “We can probably assume that wooden tools have been around just as long as stone ones, that is, two and a half or three million years,“ he said. Of the thousands of archaeological sites that can be traced to the era, wood has been recovered from fewer than 10. The projectiles unearthed at the Schöningen site, known as Spear Horizon, are considered the oldest preserved hunting weapons.

The reason for the reports of a deteriorating service in Ukraine are unclear, and Starlink, SpaceX and Musk declined to comment. Even with the Starlink devices that are firmly in the Ukrainian military’s control, there is a concern among Ukrainian officials that Russians may hijack their communications or hack them. Ukraine’s SBU intelligence service claimed last year that Russian military hackers were trying to steal battlefield communications sent from Ukrainian soldiers’ mobile devices to Starlink terminals. She promised 30 at a later date, and also posted images of a stack of 20 apparent donated Starlink units. Ukrainian units have also been posting footage of multiple drone strikes against Russian trenches where Starlink terminals have been spotted.

Former NFL Quarterback Norm Snead Dies at Age 84
  + stars: | 2024-01-15 | by ( Associated Press | Jan. | At P.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +2 min
Norm Snead, an NFL quarterback for 16 seasons in the 1960s and '70s who was a four-time Pro Bowl selection, has died. A spokesperson for Wake Forest football, for which Snead played collegiately before turning pro, told The Associated Press on Monday that the school learned from Snead's family that he died Sunday. He chose Washington and played there for three seasons, with two Pro Bowl appearances, before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for Sonny Jurgensen and Claude Crabb. Snead spent seven seasons with the Eagles during an era in which they never reached the playoffs. Despite that, he was picked for the Pro Bowl in 1965, when he threw for 15 touchdowns and 2,346 yards and led a league-high three game-winning drives for a team that finished 5-9.

In Kristoffer Borgli’s new A24 film ‘Dream Scenario,’ Nicolas Cage plays Paul Matthews, a man who keeps showing up in strangers’ dreams. Photo: A24Nobody goes to the movies for a message about the internet. So filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli wrapped his in a bizarro premise with plenty of comedy and a surprisingly apt character for lead actor Nicolas Cage. In the new “Dream Scenario,” recently released in theaters by A24, Cage plays an unremarkable guy who starts showing up inexplicably in others’ dreams, even those of far-flung strangers. It brings him a strange and unintentional fame, one that starts to sour as public perception shifts against the man making bedtime cameos in people’s minds.

The director Alexander Payne with Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Photo: Seacia Pavao/Focus FeaturesDirector Alexander Payne loves old movies so much he made one himself. “The Holdovers” is about disparate characters marooned together at a New England prep school over Christmas break in 1970. From the Cat Stevens music on the soundtrack to the grainy texture of the picture itself, the film plays like a product of its time setting. More than replicating a vintage look and sound, Payne wanted to summon an emotional spell that enduring films of the past can still conjure.

Taika Waititi as Blackbeard, a real-deal pirate with a sensitive side. Photo: Nicola Dove/HBOIt’s a fact of the TV-everywhere era: At any given moment, people are gushing over a show you’ve never seen or even heard of. As a voice of his generation, Matthew Perry’s was the one with the sarcasm. “I’m Chandler. I make jokes when I’m uncomfortable,” says his signature character, Chandler Bing, in one episode of “Friends,” meeting an awkward moment with a self-deprecating grin and a quip that sums up Perry’s crucial role in the comedy.

George Harrison counts in, then solemn piano chords give way to the voice of John Lennon . He sings a wistful melody as the tune builds around an insistent drumbeat, stabbing strings and backing vocals by Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr . The chorus: “Now and then, I miss you…”It’s a 4-minute, 8-second rock ’n’ roll séance, a new recording that conjures an uncanny mix of past and present from history’s most unforgettable band, half of which is now deceased. It’s “the last Beatles song.”

MARTIN SCORSESE has been making the movies he calls pictures for practically his whole adult life. But 27 feature films and 16 documentaries later, he says each time is like starting over. “If I feel I’m just shooting the script—and it may be the greatest script ever made—I don’t know what I’m doing. Why am I there?” he says, as the light in a 20th-floor room in Manhattan gradually shifts on a recent afternoon. Know what I mean?”

In the book, author Walter Isaacson wrote that a Ukrainian drone submarine attack on Russian warships was disrupted by a disconnect from Starlink, ordered by Musk. Excerpts from the book raised alarm bells in Washington, among NATO allies and in the Ukrainian capital. Musk also argued, as he has in the past, that Ukraine should strike a "truce" with Russia. Musk's "peace plan" argument was shouted down by Ukraine officials, politicians and Putin experts. Earlier in the week, Sen. Warren called for a Congressional probe of Musk and SpaceX.
